Description:

Roman, early Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A lovely wheel-thrown pottery amphora with a petite base, a spherical body with an elongated lower section, a narrow neck, a collared rim meant to fit a lid, and a pair of petite handles arching between the upper neck and shoulder. The buffware vessel exhibits several pattern-molded 'ribs' along the upper and lower body. Amphorae like this example were used to hold large quantities of wine, oil, or other regularly-used substances based on the size. Size: 6.125" W x 8.375" H (15.6 cm x 21.3 cm).
