Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A beautiful pouring pitcher, free-blown from thin, nearly-transparent glass of a pale blue-green hue. The attractive vessel has a concave base, a spherical body with a rough pontil scar on one side and a pinched area near the back, a cylindrical neck ringed with applied trailing, a flared rim with an in-folded lip, and an applied trail handle joining rim to body. Thick layers of fiery rainbow-hued iridescence nicely complement the vessel's soft turquoise hue. Size: 2.875" W x 4.6" H (7.3 cm x 11.7 cm).

#139592

  • Condition: Minor abrasions to body, neck, rim, and handle, with light encrustations, micro-bubbling within glass matrix, and light weathering film, otherwise intact and very good. Pontil mark on side of body. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Nice earthen deposits as well as fabulous rainbow iridescence throughout. Old inventory label beneath base.
