Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely free-blown glass vessel, its form comprised of a near spherical body with a flared mouth and a folded rim - all upon a concave bottom with a broken pontil made during its creation. The glass itself is translucent and relatively colorless (with hints of a very pale green), though areas of rainbow iridescence enhance its appearance with dancing flecks of aqua blue, spring green, cotton candy pink, lavendar, purple, and sunny yellow hues across the surface. Size: 3.875" W x 3.375" H (9.8 cm x 8.6 cm)

Pliny the Elder paid homage to the beauty of the many hues created in hand-blown glass; however, he also sang the praises of colorless, translucent glass, ". . . the most highly valued glass is colorless and transparent, as closely as possible resembling rock-crystal." (Pliny, Natural History XXXVI.198 from "Solid Liquid" catalogue, Fortuna Fine Arts, New York, 1999, p. 64.)
