Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A free-blown amphoriskos comprised of translucent, turquoise-hued glass with a conical body and a rough pontil scar, a rounded shoulder tapering to a narrow neck, a flared and out-folded rim, and a pair of applied trail handles joining rim to shoulder. The fire-polished surface exhibits areas of faint silvery iridescence which accentuate the vessel's blue-green color. Used for holding small amounts of precious scented oils, this is an elegant example of fine Roman glasswork! Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 2.25" W x 5.1" H (5.7 cm x 13 cm); 6" H (15.2 cm) on included custom stand.

#139018

  • Condition: Surface wear and minor abrasions commensurate with age, very minor nicks to upper handle terminals, and light encrustations, otherwise intact and excellent. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Nice earthen deposits and faint silver iridescence throughout.
