Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Central Highlands, Inca, ca. 1400 to 1532 CE. A fierce six-pointed star-shaped stone mace head, carved from rich grey-green stone, made to be attached to a solid shaft used to bludgeon one's opponents, or perhaps a helmet to highlight the warrior's ferocity. In addition to being a very lethal weapon designed for destruction, the star form attests to the ancients' reverence for the celestial realm. An example like this one was probably a symbol of authority rather than being used in war. Size: 3.1" W (7.9 cm); 4.7" H (11.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Andrade collection New York, USA, acquired 1960s; ex Knoedler & Company
