Greece, South Italy/Magna Graecia, Campania, ca. 4th century BCE. A small, squat lekythos (oil pouring vessel) with a long, thin neck ending in a flat, flared rim; a very thin handle rises in a curve from the shoulder up to lower neck. The piece sits on a flat, slightly rolled foot. The piece is glazed in a deep, glossy black that has attained a beautiful iridescence. Campanian wares, one of the five types of known pottery produced in the Greek South Italic colonies, were made by Greek colonists in the cities of Capua and Cumae.
