Description:

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 CE. A beautiful pottery bell krater adorned via the red figure technique with a stunning Lady of Fashion decorating each side. This type of pottery vessel was quite precious as it was used to mix water and fortified wine at the table. The handsome form is comprised of raised foot, a classic bell-shaped body with twin upward reaching handles, and a flaring rim. Each Lady of Fashion is elegantly painted in profile, wearing an elaborate sakkos, one with a beaded necklace. Note the liberal yet oh so tasteful usage of fugitive white paint. A superb example of this very desirable style of ancient pottery. Adding to the decorative program is a stylized palmette beneath each handle, vertical panels with schematized chevrons flanking the handles, and a register of schematized chevrons beneath the rim. intact with repairs to foot only. Size: 8.375" W x 9.75" H (21.3 cm x 24.8 cm)
