Description:

Ancient Seas, Middle Miocene to end of Pliocene eras, ca. 28 to 1.5 million years ago. A remarkable, almost entirely black fossilized tooth from the prehistoric megalodon shark. The root is a matte charcoal gray hue with mineral deposits and stable fissures form the fossilization process. The enamel and bourlette boast a lustrous black surface naturally speckled with hues of cream and copper creating a lovely marbleized effect. Light vertical striations adorn the bourlette as a result of the fossilization process. A beautiful tooth that has developed these striking colors from the minerals in the sediment as it rested for centuries at the bottom of the ocean! Megalodons were among the largest predators the ocean ever saw, but their teeth are the only parts that have survived since their cartilage bodies could not fossilize. Interestingly, medieval people believed that these strange teeth were moon rocks or dragon's tongues! Size: 4.88" L x 3.78" W (12.4 cm x 9.6 cm); 4.625" H (11.7 cm) on included custom stand.
