Description:

North America, Pliocene to Pleistocene (Ice Age), ca. 100,000 to 20,000 years old. A lovely molar from an adult mastodon (Mammut americanum). It has one extended area of the root as well as three large ridges that exhibit deep and lustrous shades of brown consistent with fossilization. High-crowned teeth like the mastodon's - named by French naturalist Georges Cuvier in 1817, and meaning "nipple teeth" because of their shape - were suited to mashing leaves and twigs rather than grasses; mastodons lived in forested environments, unlike mammoths, who lived in open grasslands. This is a fantastic fossil from an animal whose fossilized remains are so impressive that Thomas Jefferson kept some of them in the White House - mistakenly believing that they belonged to a long-dead carnivore. Size: 4.125" L x 3.25" W x 3.625" H (10.5 cm x 8.3 cm x 9.2 cm).

#148034

  • Condition: Minor chips to areas of root and ridges, with light encrustations. Overall very nicely preserved, with the crown in great condition and much of the root is preserved. A few stable hairline fissures are a result of the fossilization process and do not threaten the integrity of the tooth.
