Classical World, central Italy, Etruria, ca. 600 to 400 BCE. A stunning cast-bronze wine strainer of a finely aged presentation exhibiting deep blue-green patina across the entire exterior. The strainer features a shallow circular bowl with a tall rim, a rounded interior, and a smaller, bulb-form center with dozens of perforations that form the functional component of the utensil. A lengthy handle along the verso is formed from a curved and regularly crimped bronze wire with elongated petaloid terminals that attach to the verso of the bowl via a pair of petite rivets. Strainers were crucial tools when serving wine that were used to filter out the pieces of sediment and flavoring materials. Though wine was consumed nearly every day by people at every level of society, bronze strainers like this example would have been a fine item owned by a wealthy family.
