Description:

Roman, Eastern Empire, probably Syria, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A gorgeous unguent-holding vessel known as an unguentarium, free-blown from translucent glass of a vibrant blue-green hue. The vessel has a petite base with a smooth pontil scar, a drop-form body, a corseted neck line beneath a cylindrical neck, and an in-folded rim. Areas of silvery iridescence have formed inside the body and nicely complements the vessel's turquoise color without obstructing its exterior beauty. Size: 1.2" W x 5" H (3 cm x 12.7 cm).

Provenance: ex-Leonard Lyle Dees collection, Topeka, Kansas, USA, acquired between 1950 and 1970

#148158

  • Condition: Minor nicks to rim and body, with light abrasions, micro-bubbling within glass matrix, and light encrustations within body, otherwise intact and very good. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Light earthen deposits throughout, and nice silver iridescence within vessel. Old informative label beneath base.
