Description:

East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 907 CE. A finely cast bronze mirror of circular form with a flat, polished face and a verso featuring an intricate scene of stylized animals in relief. Bronze, a precious material, was used for mirrors by the wealthy and elite, by polishing one face until it was highly reflective. Encircled by a raised periphery, the verso is elegantly detailed with 4 lions running through vines and grape clusters accompanied by 2 peacocks and 3 petite birds. The animals all circle around a central, larger lion who serves as a knob for the mirror. The lion-and-grapevine motif was popular in China, meant to symbolize the harmony of the universe and the balance of the forces of nature. Size: 3.8" Diameter (9.7 cm)

The design shows the influence of outside culture on Tang China. The lions, described by Chinese sources as "auspicious animals," were brought to the country from the West; grapes, similarly, were brought from the west by Zhang Qian. These mirrors, with this design, were mass produced during the Tang Dynasty; many found their way to Japan and presumably many others travelled west along the Silk Road. The elaborate skill required to cast such a delicate design speaks to the wealth and technical prowess of China during the Tang Dynasty.
