Description:

Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kuba, ca. mid-20th century CE. A fabulous and large woven of Kuba cloth skirt made from raffia and cotton using cut-pile and embroidery techniques to create bold geometric patterns in neutral tones of black and warm beige. This piece is made up of multiple separate panels sewn together with a thick rope like hem made from twisted raffia fibers - the end without this hem secured to the waist. The inner band of black has a cut-pile texture forming triangular shapes, and the central tan panels are embroidered with the black threads and has 2 cotton gingham green applique patches. The making of such a textile is a laborious team effort: traditionally the men weave the cloth on a heddle loom and the women and children, cut pile, applique, and embroider. These cloths are worn during ceremonial events, and this example is a woman's skirt. Size: 55" L x 27" W (139.7 cm x 68.6 cm)
