Description:

Central Asia, Kyrgyzstan, Yomud or Kirghiz people, ca. 19th century CE. A gorgeous hand-woven saddle blanket made from wool threads with vibrant geometric patterns. The central motif consists of rectangular and triangular shapes known as gol or gul, in yellow, blue, cream and brown on a red ground. Three registers of repeating patterns encircle the central panel. Three quarters of the outermost border contain brown tassels that bind off the ends of the weaving. At the top center is an intentional slit for the saddle pommel to fit through. These blankets were woven by women, not only for utilitarian use but to display tribal symbols as well. The people of the central Asian steppes were semi-nomadic herders, and the wool came from the sheep they tended. Such stunning woven saddle blankets are a rarity! Size: 25" L x 22" W (63.5 cm x 55.9 cm)
