China, mid 19th century CE. A high-relief wood carving of two dynamically-posed figures that was designed to be set into the upper part of a wall in a Chinese temple. The figures wear traditional dress and stand on a background of swirling vines and flowers. A deep, rich red color suffuses the scene; below their feet are further swirling designs with sparkling specks of blue and irisdescent shell decoration. Size: 11.6" L x 6.75" W x 3.65" H (29.5 cm x 17.1 cm x 9.3 cm)
