Near East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, reign of Basil, 867 to 879 CE, struck 872 to 879 CE. Constantinople mint. Gold solidus. Obverse: Christ Pantokrator seated facing on throne. Reverse: Crowned facing busts of Basil and Constantine, holding patriarchal cross between them. Basil I was a handsome and physically powerful man who gained employment in influential official circles in Constantinople and was fortunate enough to attract the imperial eye of the reigning emperor, Michael III. After rapid promotion, Basil I became chief equerry, then chamberlain, and finally, in 866 CE, he became co emperor with Michael III. Sear 1704, D.O. 2, Ratto 1858. Size: 0.75" W (1.9 cm); 4.3 grams
