Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Ban Chiang, ca. 300 BCE. A two-part terracotta mold used to cast bronze axe heads. The two halves have flat bases, rounded exterior walls, and an ovular hole on top when placed together into which molten bronze was poured. This particular mold would have produced a large scalpel-shaped axe blade with a circular eye-shaped adornment on one side and a slightly flared neck with three low-relief vertical additions on one side and a single similar addition on the other; the head would likely have been socketed as well. Size: 4.75" H (12.1 cm).
