Africa, Mali, Malinke/Bamana peoples, late 19th to early 20th century CE. A magnificently carved wooden flute with a figural head at one end featuring a twin horned headdress, a carved coiffure with a central peak, finely incised eyes and scarification marks, and a straight nose. Below is a diamond-shaped blow hole, and the slightly flared cylindrical body is wrapped with animal hide. The music of Mali derives from the ancient Mande Empire with influences from literally hundreds of different ethnic groups in the surrounding vecinity of Mali as well as European and Moorish music.
