Description:

Indonesia, Bali, 20th century CE. This is a fantastic mask of a dog's head with accentuated snout, ears, and mouth, including pointed teeth. The ears are made of applied hide and there is inlaid fur on the cheeks. The mask is expressive with a hinged jaw. In Bali, there is an animal mask dance called the barong, which is based on a good spirit that took as its form an animal, a guardian of the forest. A mask like this may have been part of the barong, or part of other ritualistic dance dramas that are one of the cultural traditions of Bali. Size: 10" H (25.4 cm)

Exhibited: Mexican Masks of the 20th Century: A Living Tradition; Morris Museum; Morristown NJ.
