Southeast Asia Indonesia, Bali, & Timor, ca. early to mid-20th century CE; Oceania, Melanesia / Polynesia, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A collection of 3 Maritime Southeast Asia & Polynesia pieces, a lime container, prestige whale tooth vessel, and a bone clip. The cylinder is a Timorese lime jar, made from wood with a glass beaded netting, tassels, and a wood stopper decorated with a 1945 bronze Netherlands East Indies coin. The carved bone is a clip or pincer tool likely from Bali, perhaps an ornament for wearing or a utensil. The wood jar with the whale tooth mounted to the end has a narrow opening and wood cap, and the dangling rings are cut from currency shells and threaded on a cord with a blue bead. Perhaps this was a lime or medicine container for a special individual- whale teeth are highly symbolic as markers of rank and status among different island cultures, and along with the shell rings, this was an object of wealth.
