Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manabi, Bahia culture, ca. 500 BCE to 500 CE. A mold-formed pottery rattle depicting a seated figure with a tight-fitting necklace, discoid ear spools, and a large headdress with two pairs of projecting lateral tabs. Within the hollow interior are several petite balls that create a rattling sound when jostled. Traces of orange pigment are visible across the exterior. Size: 3.3" W x 4.75" H (8.4 cm x 12.1 cm)

  • Condition: Repaired from a few large pieces, with restoration to areas of nose and headdress, and resurfacing with overpainting along new material and break lines. Light fading to original pigment and softening to some finer details. Light earthen deposits throughout. Interior balls make a rattling noise when jostled.
