Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manabi Province, Bahia culture, ca. 5th to 1st century BCE. A fascinating ceramic figure with both female and male characteristics. The figure stands atop sturdy legs and flat feet with broad shoulders and wide arms that dangle down to the waist. The head is surmounted by an enormous headdress painted a dark, earthy red. The figure wears a poncho or tunic that does not reach to the waist and is decorated with stippled and incised geometric, possibly zoomorphic motifs. A small loincloth is decorated with a similar motif. This stylized figure may have represented an ancestor or an individual, and was used to furnish a tomb. Size: 6.9" W x 14.75" H (17.5 cm x 37.5 cm)

  • Condition: Repaired and restored from multiple pieces, mostly on the neck, limbs, and back. Small areas of overpaint along the repair lines. Nice preservation of details and original pigment, especially on the front of the figure and the head.
