Description:

Ancient Central Asia, Bactrian, ca. 1st millennium BCE. A wonderful example of an openwork oil lamp carved from beige-hued stone with dark green streaks throughout. The lamp features a flat base beneath a broad, cylindrical body, a square shoulder bearing dozens of drilled bullseye-style motifs, and a deep oil receptacle in the center. One corner of the lamp features a shallow groove for supporting the burning end of a wick while the other soaked in the oils within the basin. The bullseye forms atop the shoulder perhaps represent the sun and stars based on the light-producing intent of the lamp. Size: 4.1" L x 4.1" W x 1.875" H (10.4 cm x 10.4 cm x 4.8 cm)
