Description:

Central Asia, Bactrian (BMAC) culture, ca. late 3rd to early 2nd millennium BCE. A beautiful spherical stone mace head, carved from a hard, dark green stone with light green bands, and with a narrow cylindrical socket hole through its center. The color of the stone probably reminded its maker of copper, which was also used to make mace heads in this region. Mace heads first appeared in the Near East ca. 8000 BCE, alongside the development of agriculture - perhaps used to demonstrate authority as society became increasingly stratified. They radiated outward from the Near East, reaching Egypt, Europe, the steppes of central Asia, and even China. Size: 2.7" W x 2.5" H (6.9 cm x 6.4 cm)
