Central Asia, Bactria (Bactria Margiana / BMAC), ca. late 2nd to early 1st millennium BCE. A large, cone-shaped marbleized stone of rose, taupe, sienna, and white hues with a flat base, the upper portion where the body tapers to a rounded end is biconically drilled. The openings of the drilled hole have deep grooves that are somewhat worn, possibly from use as a weight or suspended idol. Stone idols like this one are known in a variety of fascinating forms throughout the pre-literate ancient world - ranging from figural anthropomorphic types to completely abstract forms like this one.
