Description:

Central Asia, Bactria, ca. 2nd millennium BCE. A handsome grey schist censer with a conical handle and a cuboid body. The body is drilled out into a wide, cylindrical opening with smooth sides and a flat base. The squared-off sides of the exterior have been scooped out at their centers, making the piece easy to wrap your hand around. The censer stands on four low, square feet. Around the exterior are repeated incised motifs. Size: 7.4" L x 3" W x 3.2" H (18.8 cm x 7.6 cm x 8.1 cm)

Provenance: private California, USA collection, by descent, moved from Germany in 1997, originally collected in the 1970s in Hamburg, Germany
