Ancient Central Asia, Bactria, ca. 2000 to 1700 BCE. A hand-carved gray steatite stamp seal of a discoid form surmounted by a triangular handle. Incised on the stamp face is a right-facing bird, perhaps an eagle based on the aquiline beak, with 1 visible wing above its body, all surrounded by vegetation within a linear border. Size: 2.125" W x 0.7" H (5.4 cm x 1.8 cm)

Provenance: private Southern California collection, USA, bestowed 2006; ex-J. Malter collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired before 2006

  • Condition: Handle reattached to top of stamp body, with thick encrustations around terminals. Minor abrasions to stamp face, topside, and handle, with light softening to some finer details. Nice surface smoothness throughout.
