Description:

Ancient Central Asia, Bactrian, ca. late 2nd to early 1st millennium BCE; ancient Near East, Sassanian (Sasanian, Sassanid) Empire, ca. 2nd to 7th century CE. A lovely gathering of five stamp seals in various shapes, all hand-carved from stones of lovely earthen hues. One Bactrian seal has a square body, a rectangular handle, and an image of a standing ibex on the stamp face, and the other is ovoid in form with an abstract fish and small bucket brought forth with red pigment. The three Sassanian seals are all circular in form, with one depicting a striding ibex, one with a pair of mating sheep, and one with a stylized scorpion. Each stamp seal has a biconically-drilled suspension hole so it could be worn as a bead or pendant. Custom putty stamps included. Size of largest (Bactrian fish): 1.2" L x 0.7" W (3 cm x 1.8 cm).

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
