Description:

Central Asia, Bactria (Bactria Margiana/BMAC), ca. 3rd to 2nd millennium BCE. A pretty rhyton, a cylindrical vessel for drinking or pouring libations, in the form of a ram. The body of the animal is long and rounded, with four stubby legs; a narrow spout rises from the animal's back. The face, ears, and horns are nicely detailed, and another spout projects from low on the animal's chest. The ram is often a symbol of virility, and was one of the earliest domesticated animals (probably second, after dogs), first domesticated in this region. Size: 5.8" L x 1.8" W x 3.5" H (14.7 cm x 4.6 cm x 8.9 cm)
