Description:

Central Asia, Bactrian, ca. 2nd millennium BCE. A stunning greyware container depicting a horse supporting a tall vessel emerging from the animal's back, two of its four flat-faced walls incised with abstract feathered patterns, this rectangular prism body resolving to a short cylindrical neck and flat broad rim, with a single handle bridging the area just beneath the shoulder to the rear end of the horse. Additional incised decorative markings adorn the chest legs and flanks of the horse as well as the body and rim of the vessel. Impressive for its equine shape and attractive incised decoration. Size: 2.75" W x 5.25" H (7 cm x 13.3 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Neil Phillips collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 1980s
