Description:

Central Asia, modern day Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan, Bactria (Bactria Margiana/BMAC), ca. 3rd to 2nd millennium BCE. A black and white stone miniature bowl with a deep impression drilled in the center of its interior. The body of the bowl is smooth and conical, with a small, flat base. A dish like this may have been used to hold salt or other condiments or small quantities of offerings used in rituals. Size: 2.5" W x 1.25" H (6.4 cm x 3.2 cm)

Bactrian vessels, like this one, were commonly made from diorite, a hard white and black speckled igneous rock. Diorite was used throughout the ancient Near East and Central Asia; for example, the Code of Hammurabi is inscribed upon a more-than-seven-foot-tall pillar of diorite.
