Description:

Central Asia, Bactria-Margiana, ca. 2nd to 1st millennium BCE. A bronze stamp seal with long spooled stem and bird-form terminal. Seal itself is a cross of equal sized arms with raised ridges in the central recessed areas. Suspension hole just below the bird allowed this to be worn as a pendant. Bactrian items like this are sometimes known as "compartmented" seals, and were cast both in geometric (like this one) and figural patterns; they are distinctive to this region. Size: 2" W x 2.125" H (5.1 cm x 5.4 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Zaveloff collection, Lakewood, New Jersey, USA, acquired from Venus Gallery, Israel, in 2002
