Description:

Central Asia, Bactria (Bactria Margiana / BMAC), ca. late 2nd to early 1st millennium BCE. A large, egg-shaped creamy pinkish marble stone with a flat base and a single large, round hole drilled through the upper portion where the body tapers to a rounded end. The upper openings of the drilled hole have deep, worn grooves with the stone inside highly polished, possibly from touch. Stone idols like this one are known in a variety of fascinating forms throughout the pre-literate ancient world. From the truly abstract Kilia-type figures that are barely recognizable as human to the exaggerated feminine shapes of so-called "Venus" figures, people in the past, as today, had a clear desire to portray human forms and did not feel constrained by naturalism. Size: 5.7" W x 9.4" H (14.5 cm x 23.9 cm)
