Description:

Central Asia, Bactria-Margiana (BMAC) (Oxus Civilization), Bronze Age, ca. 2nd millennium BCE. A delightful cast bronze vessel for holding cosmetics, capped by a round lid with a zebu bull figure atop that is perhaps attached to stick used for applying kohl. The pot has a highly decorated rounded body with a beaded equator line - above which are low relief birds and grape clusters, below which are six curled leaves. Three bent legs with hoof-like feet support it. A lid with a flat disc base capped by a small zebu bull figure sits on the top. Based on ancient evidence, we believe that the Bactrian concept of feminine beauty involved cosmetically enhanced dark eyes, which this item would have been used to create. Size: 4.25" H (10.8 cm)
