Description:

Ancient Central Asia, Bactrian, ca. 2500 to 2250 BCE. An oil lamp of a tall, slender form that is hand-carved from honey-yellow alabaster with bands of darker and lighter colors that create a wondrous presentation. The lamp body expands slightly around the shoulder and accommodates a shallow oil receptacle beneath the discoid lid. A drilled hole in the lid enabled a wick to be placed within the receptacle and lit once it was sufficiently saturated with oil. The exterior surfaces have developed pleasingly smooth textures. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size (body): 1.5" W x 3.9" H (3.8 cm x 9.9 cm); (lid): 1.8" W x 0.4" H (4.6 cm x 1 cm)
