Description:

Ancient Near East, Old Babylon, ca. 1800 BCE. A mold-formed rectangular terracotta relief plaque depicting a fierce mastiff. The canine companion sits with retracted hind legs, extended forelegs, a stocky body, and a thick collared neck that curves gently beneath the jawline. The raised head features a gaping, fang-filled mouth, drawn-back ears, a thick snout, and an almond-shaped eye peering out in an intimidating manner. Dogs were highly symbolic creatures in Old Babylon that represented loyalty and protection. Dogs were also associated with Gula, the goddess of healing. Size: 2.6" W x 4.625" H (6.6 cm x 11.7 cm); 5.2" H (13.2 cm) on included custom stand.
