Description:

Near East, Mesopotamian (Babylonian or Sumerian), ca. 2200 to 1550 BCE. A pottery relief plaque depicting a roaring lion in profile. The iconography wonderfully captures the animal's naturalistic physiognomy. Beyond this, the sculptor truly captured this lion in action, roaring ferociously! The lion is a very significant symbol of Babylon and Mesopotamian art in general, the subject of the famous Lion of Babylon statue as well as the striding lions made of polychromed molded brick of the Ishtar Gate in ancient Babylon. Size: 3.875" L x 2.75" W (9.8 cm x 7 cm)
