Description:

Ancient Near East, Babylonia, ca. 2nd millennium BCE. This is a fanciful pottery mold showing a seated griffin (gryphon), with wings extended from the back and the body posed in an unmistakeable sitting feline position. There are fine details on the face and wings; the paws are also particularly charming. Pottery plaques like this one were made in single, open molds, and are one of our major sources for understanding life and beliefs in ancient Babylon. Size: 2.6" W x 3.4" H (6.6 cm x 8.6 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private New Jersey collection
