Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Aztec, ca. 1400 to 1532 CE. A hand-built pottery smoking pipe with a body formed like a kneeling anthropomorphic armadillo. The piriform body doubles as the receptacle, the conical spout doubles as the pipe stem and mouthpiece, and the kneeling legs double as the stable base. The armadillo head protruding from the receptacle rim has a conical profile with almond-shaped eyes and perky ears with one hand held just above the slender mouth. Size: 5.2" L x 1.5" W x 2.9" H (13.2 cm x 3.8 cm x 7.4 cm)
