Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Aztec Empire, ca. 1400 to 1521 CE. This is a necklace with a wide black leather cord and a silver wire wrapped around a large round obsidian pendant, shaped by percussion and smoothed by something abrasive (sandstone?). Obsidian objects are more commonly associated with the Maya, but the Aztec also had them - although there is some uncertainty as to whether they were actually manufactured by earlier civilizations revered by the Aztecs, like the people of Teotihuacan, whose artwork was often taken by the Aztecs and treasured in the same way that we collect antiquities today. Size: 20" L (50.8 cm)

Provenance: Wearable, one-of-a-kind custom-designed ancient art jewelry from Muzeion Gallery, Dallas, TX
