Description:

Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Aztec culture, ca. 1200 to 1532 CE. A wonderful gathering of six hand-knapped ancient glass / obsidian objects. Three objects are cores of slender rectangular forms with incredibly sharp edges, and the largest item is a much larger core with a fluted obverse and a flattened verso. The two remaining objects are knapped eccentrics in abstract serpentine and bulbous forms. Obsidian was an incredibly important resource in ancient Mesoamerica that was traded far from its source in the volcanic regions of the Sierra Madres in Mexico and Guatemala. Eccentrics were used to represent various types of figures, animals, or symbols, and cores were utilized for cutting even the strongest of materials. Size of largest (fluted obverse): 3.75" L x 1.1" W (9.5 cm x 2.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-Alfred Stendahl collection, owner of Stendahl Gallery, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired before 1980
