Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, city of Cuautitlan, Aztec culture, ca. 1400 to 1521 CE. A hand-built redware pottery cup of a dramatically corseted form with a flared foot and a deep basin. The red-hued vessel displays traces of black-painted linear motifs surmounted by a pair of abstract spiral-headed serpents. Size: 3.6" W x 4" H (9.1 cm x 10.2 cm)

  • Condition: Minor nicks and abrasions to upper and lower rims, with fading to original black pigment, and light encrustations within recessed openings, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits throughout. Faint remains of black pigment on exterior, and great remains of red pigment throughout. Old label reading "Cuautitlan" underneath foot.
