Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Mexico, Aztec empire, ca. 1300 to 1500 CE. A lovely pottery rattle of a long, columnar form with an anthropomorphic head, perhaps intended as a deity, at one end surmounted by a pottery loop. The stylized visage features a bulbous nose, ring-shaped eyes, and an open, ovoid mouth, all flanked by a pair of target-motif earspools, and crowned by an elaborate headdress of 3 protruding nodules above a trio of horizontal stripes. Rattles like this usually served as the elongated rattle leg of a ceremonial tripod sahumador or incense burner. Give it a shake and hear a strong rattle sound emitted from the petite ball of clay within! Size: 12.6" L x 2.5" Diameter (32 cm x 6.4 cm)

Provenance: private Sonoma, California, USA collection, acquired prior to 1986
