Description:

Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Aztec Empire, ca. 1300 to 1521 CE. A superb bowl painted in rich burgundy and black hues. A target-motif decorates the wide interior cavity that extends onto its outer rim. The bowl sits atop a trio of abstract zoomorphic legs with petite ovoid eyes, long snouts, flared nostrils, and parted mouth openings. Bowls like this were perhaps used for ceremonial or ritual contexts given both the zoomorphic imagery and its functionality as a rattler. Tiny pottery balls inside the legs hollow cavity emanate a rattling sound when jostled. Size: 6" Diameter x 3.5" H (15.2 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: private Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, USA collection, acquired before 2001; ex-private North Oaks collection, Minnesota, USA
