Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty to Republic Era, ca. 19th century CE. A pair of ornate shoushan stamp seals, each made to be and have been used, topped with intricately carved qilins - mythical creatures featuring wings and antlers. Two vertical sides are inscribed with Chinese characters, and an etched river landscape spans over three sides. The seal faces are carved in the 'yang wen' or 'zhuwen' style, where the characters are in relief, designed to be inked for imprinting. Historically, such seals served as signatures and were essential in legitimizing important documents. Shoushan stone, renowned as the finest agalmatolite in China, has been sourced from Shoushan village in northern Fujian for carvings since the 5th century CE. Size: 1" L x 1" W x 5" H (2.5 cm x 2.5 cm x 12.7 cm)

The vast majorit of these found on the market were made as tourist souvenirs. This pair was made to be used and shows signs that they have indeed been used.
