Description:

Oceania, Australia, probably Andanooka, Cretaceous Period, ca. 110 million years ago. A stunning opal professionally prepared and cut to show off the splendor of the dazzling opal veins within the umber stone. The natural color play is pearlescent with a lilac and pale periwinkle blue hue. Opal is a silica and water compound that settles into niches and crevices of stone or organic matter where it solidifies - as seen here. The hues in this opal are remarkable and the stone is cut so it can stand upright on its own. Ancient cultures considered opal to be one of the most magical of precious gems because of the array of colors it contained! Size: 3.25" L x 1" W x 2" H (8.3 cm x 2.5 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii collection, acquired 2000 to 2010
