Description:

Oceania, Australia, Cretaceous Period, ca. 110 million years ago. A dazzling display of opal encased in a stone matrix. The color play of blue and purple iridescence within the opal is wonderfully captured in the fissures of the matrix and contrasts nicely with the brown tones. The matrix is sliced and polished on both sides to create a flat surface that could be laid flat on a table or propped up to display. Opal is a silica and water compound that settles into niches and crevices of stone or organic matter where it solidifies. A remarkable piece! Size: 5.5" L x 1" W x 8.125" H (14 cm x 2.5 cm x 20.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-Stein collection, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA, acquired prior to 2010
