Lionel Wurrkioj (Aboriginal Australian) ca. 1999 CE. "2 Mimis with Hunting Spears." A beautiful, hand-painted eucalyptus bark painting using traditional Aboriginal techniques and featuring stylized iconography of mimis, supernatural spirits with humanoid forms. These sprightly beings are thin and spindly - as depicted here- they hide in crevices when there are storms and wind for protection according to folklore. These impish mimis are appear during the Dreamtime as mischievous but mostly harmless, and taught the first people how to paint, hunt, and use fire for cooking. Here the pair are surrounded with spears and other hunting implments. Size: 20" L x 7.25" W (50.8 cm x 18.4 cm)
