Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Mexico, Teotihuacan, ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. A finely carved greenstone maskette depicting a characteristically abstract human visage demonstrating the Teotihuacan artisans' embrace of geometry with a horizontal brow, a triangular nose with delineated nostrils, angular ears pierced to suspend ornaments, an open ovoid mouth, and similarly long oval eyes. These depressions in the eyes and mouth may have originally possessed inlays of shell or stone. While the indigenous of this region did not practice naturalistic portraiture, this piece exemplifies the idealized facial type that functioned as a Teotihuacan symbolic motif for humankind. The piece is laterally perforated for attachment to or suspension from sculptures depicting humans or mummy bundles. A superb example. Custom, museum-quality stand. Size: 2.75" W x 3.25" H (7 cm x 8.3 cm), with stand 4.875" H (12.4 cm)
