Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica/Nicaragua, Greater Nicoya culture, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. The indigenous peoples of Greater Nicoya, an ancient region that extended from southwestern coastal Honduras to the far northwestern Pacific coastal region of Costa Rica and the Pacific side of coastal Nicaragua, thrived for many centuries before the first Spanish explorers arrived. They had no written language but spoke Nahuatl and had continual contact with the Aztecs of Central Mexico. As artisans, the people of Nicoya created wondrous polychrome ceramics such as this whistle depicting a seated female figure with a characteristically triangle-shaped head presenting an expressive wide-eyed visage with blow hole and finger holes on the back of the form. She wears a headdress, earspools, and body paint or tattoo markings of intricate linear and abstract geometric patterns as well as stylized flowers over her breasts, all in red, black, and orange hues. Size: 4.125" W x 5.625" H (10.5 cm x 14.3 cm)
